Just thought I'd write on a good day, as it's often to only think of ahc in light of the bad days
After a pretty bad 4 or 5 months through the middle of last year, Patrick has had a really good run. He's three this month, so I'm wondering if this is a period between the 'phases' that some ahc specialists have identified. Either way, it's been welcome.
He is still having attacks, on a weekly basis, but they are mostly short lived ones and often stop after a rest or sleep. Only very rarely do they go beyond one day. This is a massive change from last year where he had a couple of attacks that lasted a month or more and set back his development a huge amount.
All this has allowed him to learn a lot. He's walking with fewer wobbles. Up the stairs ...and down the stairs He loves climbing over and under everything.
He's making lots and lots of noises that are approaching real words. Yesterday he woke me up by sitting on my chest, holding my nose, and saying 'PAPA' - for the first time! I was a happy Dad ;D
He goes to school almost everyday. His aunty has been great in that respect as she volunteers as a 'shadow teacher' when he gets too excited and loses his arm or something. Occasionally she's given him midazolam to stop a bigger attack, and it's reassuring to have someone who knows what to do and quickly.
At school he is beginning to concentrate more and follow simple instructions. He loves other kids and I can see how much he wants to socialise. This is a big relief because I work with a number of autistic kids and can see how difficult it is for them, and their parents, with the lack (or abundance) of personal attachment they can suffer.
He's developed 'favourites'. Favourite foods, favourite toys and especially favourite TV shows. He will walk up to the DVD player, remove whatever Lene and I happen to be watching, sort through the stack of movies until he finds 'Barney' or 'Mickey Mouse' and then put it in the player (usually upside down, but still...)
We're experiencing all of this with big smiles. Happy days.
I hope all of you are experiencing a number of these too.
;D ;D ;D
